The poor advertisement of the 2024 TotalEngeries Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) has sparked a public debate with several citizens questioning the way the government has handled the matter.
CHAN is set to officially kick off on Saturday, 2 August, 2025 but not so much has been done to advertise the competition on different electronic, print and digital media platforms in Uganda.
A section of Members of Parliament including the Speaker, Rt. Hon Anita Among have also shown concern about the low media coverage of the CHAN competition, saying it is an important opportunity for the sports industry which the country should exploit.
“When the country was hosting CSPOC and NAM Summit, the whole country was engaged and there was sufficient publicity. What happened with CHAN?”, asked the Speaker during Tuesday’s Plenary.
The latest information this site has gathered now indicates that the Local Organizing Committee has put in place measures to increase public awareness about the tournament beyond the billboards that are currently being put up in different parts of Kampala.
“These include providing
FUFA Shs 1 billion to run promotions on TV and radios, digital platforms,
social media influencers, megaphones (bizindaalo), digital channels among others,” revealed Dr Dennis Mugimba Chairperson Communication and Signage Sub-committee at a press conference this morning.
He explained that the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) was assigned with this task of coordinating the advertising of CHAN by the Local Organizing Committee.
According to Dr. Mugimba, FUFA plans to spend over Shs 200 million on radio, television, print and media adverts. Money will also be spent on hiring digital Influencers to market the competition on different social media platforms, media visits, awareness drives and focus will be on greater kampala Metropolitan.
