The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has released the traffic management Plan ahead of the highly anticipated 2024 TotalEngeries Africa Nations Championship tournament (CHAN).
The tournament which is co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will kick off on 2 August with an opening match played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Tanzania. The very first match to be hosted in Uganda at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole will kick off on Monday 4 August.
According to the Traffic Police, the primary objective of this plan is to provide a comprehensive Traffic management plan that will be used while policing the tournament paying attention to the Hotels, routes the training grounds and the stadiums where the games will be played.
Here are the key things inside this traffic management plan you need to know:
The football teams of the participating countries will reside at hotels including Munyonyo Hotel,FUFA Hotel ,kisaasi.Serena Hotel Kampala, Mestil Hotel, Golden Tulip Hotel,Speke Resort Munyonyo, Skyz Hotel Naguru and Four Points by Sheraton.
These will be the routes for Tournament participating Countries to their respective hotels;
To Munyonyo hotel
Entebbe international Airport – Kampala Entebbe Express way – kajjansi express to Munyonyo Hotel.
To Mestil Hotel
Entebbe international Airport – Kampala Entebbe Express way – Northern Bypass – Bwaise Interchange – Kubbiri Roundabout – Mulago Traffic Lights – Yusuf Lule Road – Jinja Traffic Lights (Punjani) – Mukwano Roundabout – Mukwano Road up to Mestil Hotel.
To Serena Hotel Kampala
Entebbe international Airport – Kampala Entebbe Express way – Northern Bypass – Bwaise Interchange – Kubbiri Roundabout – Mulago Traffic Lights – Yusuf Lule Road – Fairway Traffic Lights at Golf Course – Former Nakumat Roundabout – UBC Roundabout the enter Serena Hotel.
To Speke Resort Munyonyo

To Mandela National Stadium Annex Namboole
From the respective Hotel, Yusuf Lule Road – Mulago Traffic Light – Kubbiri Roundabout – Kalerwe Roundabout and Interchange – Northern Bypass – Namboole roundabout and enter Mandela National Stadium main gate.
Wankulukuku Stadium
From the respective Hotel to Northern Bypass, Busega roundabout to Nateete Traffic, lights Kabuusu traffic lights, slope to Wankulukuku stadium.
KISU Bukoto
From the respective Hotel to Mulago Traffic Lights –kubbiri traffic lights Kalerwe flyover to Kyebando Bukoto roundabout – Turn to KISU playground.
FUFA Stadium Kadiba Mengo
From respective Hotel to Mulago traffic lights, Wandegeya traffic lights, Makerere hill road,Nakulabye traffic lights, Balintuma road – to Kadiba stadium Mengo.
Kyambogo University Grounds
From respective hotel to Jinja Road Traffic Lights (Punjani) – then Jinja Road – Kyambogo junction and Ministry of Works – then to Kyambogo University Playground.
To Mandela National Stadium Namboole
All teams moving from their respective Hotel will use Yusuf Lule Road – Mulago Traffic Light – Kubbiri Roundabout – Kalerwe Roundabout and Interchange – Northern Bypass – Namboole roundabout and enter Mandela National Stadium main gate.
The Directorate of Traffic has also noted that there will be deployment of traffic personnel to manage traffic on routes, venues, parking space, junctions, roundabouts, fuel stations and other access roads.Traffic motorized patrols will be deployed along the routes.
Recovery vehicles will be positioned on standby at several strategic areas including Clock Tower, Kalerwe, CPS Kampala, Bwaise, Mulago Traffic Lights, Kubbiri Roundabout, Busega round about, Naalya Roundabout, Nambole Roundabout.
There will also be diversion of traffic in cases of accidents, crimes (including terrorism), or natural hazards.A total of 700 Traffic personnel will be deployed on a shift along the main and alternative routes, at all junctions, roundabouts, access roads, trading centers, and venues to direct traffic and manage parking.
