Uganda’s fairytale run at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) came to an emotional end on Saturday evening at the fully-packed Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, after falling 1-0 to defending champions Senegal in a fiercely fought quarterfinal clash.
The decisive moment arrived in the 62nd minute when Senegal winger Libasse Guèye broke free down the left before setting up Oumar Ba, who calmly slotted home to hand the holders the edge. Despite a spirited response from the hosts, the Cranes were unable to find an equaliser.
Uganda pushed hard in the closing stages, spurred on by a roaring Namboole crowd. Substitute Kiza Usama almost turned hero when Senegal’s goalkeeper Marc Philips Arona Diouf spilled a late effort, creating chaos in the box. Unfortunately, Usama’s shot flew over the bar, leaving fans holding their heads in disbelief.
Cranes goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa had earlier produced a composed performance, ensuring the first half remained cagey with very few clear chances for either side. The encounter largely turned into a tactical battle, with both teams demonstrating discipline and patience.
While the result ended Uganda’s CHAN dream, the tournament will go down in history as the nation’s most successful outing. For the very first time, the Cranes advanced to the quarterfinals, breaking the jinx after six previous attempts.
“This is more than just football—it’s history in the making. The players showed resilience, unity, and hunger that gives us hope for the future,” one fan shared outside Namboole, capturing the mood of pride despite the heartbreak.
Even the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) acknowledged the achievement, stating: “FUFA salutes the players, coaches, and fans whose passion and dedication drove the Cranes to this historic milestone at CHAN 2024.”
Uganda’s milestone also stood out regionally, with neighbours Kenya and Tanzania bowing out at the same stage. Hosting the competition added extra weight to the Cranes’ achievement, making this campaign a landmark moment for East African football.
As the curtain falls on CHAN 2024 for Uganda, the echoes of the crowd at Namboole and the Cranes’ fighting spirit will live on. The journey may have ended, but the belief it has ignited marks the beginning of a new chapter in Ugandan football.
