The United States Mission in Uganda has issued new guidance for Ugandans applying for student visas, stating that applicants must ensure their social media accounts are set to public.
The directive applies to those seeking visas under the F, M, or J categories. According to the U.S. Embassy, every visa adjudication is considered a national security decision, and consular officers are required to use all available information when conducting screening and vetting.
“Visa applicants, take note!” the post reads.
“Starting now, if you’re applying for a student visa (F, M, or J category visa), make sure your social media accounts are set to public. This helps with the identity and admissibility checks required by U.S. law,” the mission added.
The US Not including this info could result in a visa denial or make you ineligible for future visas.
Be honest, double check your application, and make sure everything is accurate before submitting!

As part of the visa process, applicants are required to provide their social media identifiers on the application forms. The Embassy has emphasized that failure to include this information could lead to visa denial or render an applicant ineligible for future visas.
In its advisory, the Mission urged applicants to be truthful and thorough in completing their forms, to double-check all submitted information, and to ensure that their online profiles are accessible for verification.
The new requirement highlights the increasing significance of digital footprints in international travel and immigration processes.
